SmartWay Partners

EPA, SmartWay Partners maximize freight efficiencies

SmartWayThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership is a public-private collaborative with carriers and shippers that want to lower their fuel costs with a goal toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a more sustainable global business climate. Through the partnership, SmartWay partners set a benchmark, exchange useful information, develop a plan and execute a strategy to help them save fuel, money and the environment. SmartWay Transport Partners lead the way towards a cleaner, more efficient transportation future – a “win-win” opportunity for all.
EPA and its SmartWay Partners aim to eliminate 33 to 66 million metric tons of CO2 emissions and up to 200,000 tons of NOx emissions per year by 2012. This represents savings of 150 million barrels of fuel a year – equivalent to taking about 12 million cars off the road. The idea is simple: improving efficiency saves fuel and money, reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and improves air quality.
In recent years, rising energy costs have put significant and continuous pressure on freight carriers to reduce fuel use, keep the costs of transporting goods in check, and find creative ways to help them remain competitive. These strategies include a broad range of both proven and emerging technology solutions, and a new focus on intermodal options.
At the same time, leading manufacturers and retail shippers are taking action to strengthen the environmental performance of their supply chains, effectively addressing a number of sustainability issues raised by investors, activist groups, communities, government agencies and non-government organizations throughout the world.
SmartWay is helping to address these needs. The partnership provides a place for stakeholders throughout the freight industry to collaborate, share their expertise and learn from one another. Organizations that join the partnership are working in at least one of each of the partnership categories, which include freight carriers, freight shippers and logistics providers. Participants in each category commit to meeting efficiency improvement goals. Freight carrier partners analyze their current fleet efficiency and carbon emission outputs, and then commit to a three-year improvement target. Freight shipper partners commit to send more freight with partner carriers and reduce emissions from the shipment of their freight. Logistics partners also commit to utilize more partner carriers. Affiliate organizations, such as national trade associations, state and local government agencies and educational groups, work with EPA to support and publicize the partnership.
Since its launch five years ago, more than 2,000 companies have joined this valuable partnership, annually saving an estimated 600 million gallons of diesel fuel and lowering CO2 emissions by 6.4 million tons. For more information about the SmartWay Transport Partnership, including details on how to join, visit them online at epa.gov or call 1-734-214-4767.
