Berry, berry good for you

Berry, berry good for you
There is one thing that beats a bowl of ice cream or a piece of cake any day, and that's a nice stack of fresh berries. Berries of all sorts are coming into season right now. Blue, black, cran, straw, razz...whatever flavor or taste...they are simply fabulous.
Not only are they mini-flavor powerhouses (yeah, sink your teeth into a freshly picked strawberry), but berries are nature's multivitamin - and berries grow everywhere. You can find the Vitamin C-loaded cloudberry growing in the Ice Road sub-Arctic and the Mayhaw across the American South. Native Americans used unripe Mayhaws to treat bladder problems.
Researchers rank berries tops when it comes to antioxidants and other disease-fighting chemicals. They are the best source of anthocyanins that sweep free radicals off our DNA.
Blueberries have been linked to eye health because they strengthen the capillaries that carry nutrients to the eye muscles and nerves. What driver doesn't want to help his eyes?
The science aside, berries are good - and smart - eating. Order a bowl of berries for dessert. Make a berry smoothie in your blender. Keep a basket of rinsed strawberries next to you for a delicious snack as you are driving.
But, remember, you don't have to work hard to have a berry, berry good time with those flavor nuggets, whether they are blue, black, razz or straw!

Recipe of the Month
A quick berry cooking tip (or two):
OTR hunters with a home-cooking bent, try a Cumberland Sauce made from red currant jelly. Add blackberries or blueberries to your muffins…or glaze your next bbq'd chicken with a raspberry chipotle sauce.
