Driven Women

Cute

Dear GG,

DOT requires drivers to get a health certificate to be fit to drive, right?! Then why do they put handicapped parking places in the rest areas? In the truck parking area? And WHY do people drive on parkways and park on driveways?"

Jersey Bull
Missouri

Your handle is Jersey Bull, yet you live in Missouri? Now I understand your line of questioning.

Well, Jersey Bull, you'll be relieved to know you're not alone. Others have asked me about the handicapped parking and restrooms as well. So let's set the record straight. While truckers have to pass a thorough physical exam, there are people with handicaps able to drive RVs and hitched trailers. Depending upon how big their rig is, they may require a tractor trailer-sized parking space, hence the handicapped parking in some (not many that I've seen) rest areas where trucks usually park. And it's these people who also may require handicapped-accessible facilities. Remember, handicapped doesn't necessarily mean an obvious disability.

Jersey Bull, I know you're being cute about the driveway/ parkway thing, so we'll let that slide. I'm going to go out on a limb here, though. Are you single? Lonely? Just finished serving a sentence? Hey, I'm just being cute.

Cheers,
GG
